My copy of Labyrinth Lord Advanced Edition Companion arrived today. I took a few moments today to read through it. Here are my thoughts.

Frick'n cool.

Rather then introduce a completely new set of rules to create a simulacrum AD&D game, Daniel Proctor merged the basic edition into the advanced. Where the original game 1E AD&D game had an alternate table and an alternate set of rules for almost every instance, the Advanced edition game for Labyrinth Lord merely extends the former.

So you can pick up playing it right where you are with the other or not implement it at all. Either the game mechanics are the same.

Here's a summary:

  • Race is separate from class, although the race as a class is still in play.
  • More classes Assassin, Monk, Ranger, Paladin, Illusionist, Druid
  • Introduction of more alignments: good/neutral/evil for each subset
  • Optional rules for age, poisons, and professions
  • New monsters
  • New magic

In the introduction the author Daniel Proctor states, "If you play using AEC you will be playing advanced first edition rules as most people played them." I couldn't agree more.

Labyrinth Lord is free to download. But if you're like me you'll want to buy a copy so Dan can keep producing more. Order you're copy of Advanced Edition Companion
